90% of Mazda CX-5 going out as diesels after upgrade

The president of Mazda Motor Corporation, Takashi Yamanouchi, announced that over 90% of CX-5 sales are now of the car's diesel version, following feature upgrades in December.

President Yamanouchi, after an interview on finances February 6 in Tokyo, spoke to the media: "CX-5 sales last year were slightly over 80% diesel, but since the addition of a kickdown switch and other enhancements in December, the percentage has gotten even higher — to 91 or 92%. So orders have definitely kept coming in, especially with the release of the Atenza."
He added, "The Atenza, which also has a high percentage of diesel sales at over 70%, exceeded our initial expectations as well. In Japan, up until two years ago, only about 9,000 diesel cars were sold per year. The CX-5 alone, with 20,000 to 30,000 units sold, represents a threefold growth in the market. We'd really like to focus on this technology going forward and we're preparing to implement it in a variety of different vehicle types."
