2014 Mazda6: Introduction from Autoblog

The new-for-2014 Mazda6 sedan is more than just a pretty face. For Mazda, it marks the company's best effort yet at competing in the highly competitive midsize sedan segment, all the while staying true to the brand's core value of offering high levels of driver involvement above all. We certainly came away impressed after our first drive of the sleek Six in France last fall, and we knew right from the start that this would be a car we'd want to spend a lot of time with back here at home.

So with that in mind, the folks at Mazda graciously agreed to loan us the fully loaded Soul Red tester you see here for a one-year stay in the Autoblog long-term garage. Because of how important this car is to the segment, and to Mazda as a brand, we know there's going to be a lot to talk about it over the next 12 months. Right now, though, allow us to introduce you to the newest member of our long-term family.

All that, combined with small one-off items like the premium for Soul Red paint, $75 clear film rear paint protection, $75 cargo mat, $125 door sill trim plates and $900 package that includes Mazda's radar cruise control and forward obstruction warning, and the as-tested price of our car is a cool $31,765, including $795 for destination.

Inside, our Soul Red exterior is matched with a full-on black interior (a two-tone Almond and black setup is also available).  The cabin looks modern, with a 5.8-inch touchscreen display. That said, our initial impressions of the interior are that it's comfortable and quiet, though we'll see how that holds up after more butts get in those seats.

We'll be watching fuel economy closely, too, as Mazda rates the new Six at 26 miles per gallon city and a lofty 38 mpg highway. That's with the standard 2.5-liter Skyactiv inline four-cylinder engine under the hood, putting out 184 horsepower and 185 pound-feet of torque, mated to a six-speed automatic transmission (with steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters on our GT model).

Our first impression of the 2014 Mazda6 has left us very eager to spend a year with this new Japanese sedan. We enjoyed our time with it in France, and beyond the fact that Mazda has a really solid competitor in one of the most frequently shopped segments, this car certainly proves that the automaker is capable of building truly solid products with no assistance from former parent company Ford. Here's hoping we feel the same way after 365 days.

2014 MAZDA6 Wins NEMPA Gene Ritvo Award for Design and Elegance.

On May 10th, the all-new 2014 Mazda6 was presented with the prestigious Gene Ritvo Award for Design and Elegance from the New England Motor Press Association (NEMPA) in conjunction with Boston's Museum of Fine Arts and the Larz Anderson Auto Museum.

The Ritvo Award honors the best in design in the automotive world, whether it's a concept car, production vehicle, a marketing campaign or a particular element of a vehicle that defines elegance in design.

"The 2014 Mazda6 is a stunning example of the real-world application of the 'Soul of Motion' design language," said NEMPA President Keith Griffin.  "It was beautiful on the TAKERI concept and now is a stunning sedan that is turning heads around the world. Gene Ritvo would be proud to have his name associated with the Mazda6."

"The subtle but distinctive styling of the Mazda6 caught my eye when reviewing entries for the Ritvo Award," said Meghan Melvin of the Museum of Fine Arts. "After reading the accompanying description, I was struck by the fact that the KODO design language was clearly reflected in this particular model."

An evolution of the TAKERI Concept, Mazda6 features the brand's KODO "Soul of Motion" design language, which is inspired by the movement of animals in the wild—their ability to showcase power in its purest form combined with agile finesse. KODO's prominent personality, inside and out, easily distinguishes the Mazda6 from competitive people movers, whose personalities seem to have been relegated to match their prudish exteriors. With pronounced sheet metal strokes, the vehicle evokes a controlled intensity, seemingly moving yet standing still. Not meant to be ignored, the stunning Mazda6 presents an uncommon but welcome appeal of emotion to the mid-size segment.

On sale now, the 2014 Mazda6 starts at $20,880[1] MSRP and is the second vehicle in the Mazda lineup to fully incorporate SKYACTIV®[2] TECHNOLOGY, the brand's breakthrough engineering approach toward increasing overall vehicle efficiency.  Offering both powerful performance and improved fuel economy, the 2014 Mazda6 features best-in-class highway fuel economy of 38 miles per gallon (MPG).  Available with a SKYACTIV-G 2.5-liter gasoline engine, a SKYACTIV-D 2.2-liter clean diesel engine will be offered on 2014 Mazda6 vehicles during the second half of the year.

Also taking home an award was the MX-5 Miata. Miata is as uncomplicated and pure as a sports car can get. Since the two-seater entered the marketplace more than 20 years ago, the MX-5 has defied the convention that sports cars, particularly convertibles, were pricey, unattainable flights of fancy reserved for those with deep pockets. But enthusiasts come in all shapes, all ages, and with a variety of pocket sizes so it's no wonder that with more than 900,000 units sold, the MX-5 is by far still the best-selling two-seat roadster in the world, and with the Guinness World Records to prove it.
Mazda North American Operations is headquartered in Irvine, Calif., and oversees the sales, marketing, parts and customer service support of Mazda vehicles in the United States and Mexico through nearly 700 dealers. Operations in Mexico are managed by Mazda Motor de Mexico in Mexico City.

Maintenance Tip Monday

Electrical

Disconnecting and reconnecting your battery

If you're going to do any work on your car involving the electrical system, disconnect the battery first. To do this, loosen the connector for the negative/ground terminal first, and wiggle the terminal cap off. Use a wire-tie or similar to tie the cable back out of the way. If you need to take the battery out, you can now take off the positive connector.

Why negative then positive? If you disconnect the positive side of the battery first, the negative side is still connected to the entire car. If you drop a tool and it lands on the positive battery terminal and touches anything else on the car, you'll have an electrical short. By disconnecting the negative first, you're cutting off the return path for the current. Now, if a tool drops on to either of the battery terminals, it doesn't matter if it touches part of the chassis or not - there's no continuous path for the electrical current.

Reconnecting your battery. Connect the positive terminal first, and the negative second - the reverse of removal, and for the same reasons. When you slip the negative connector on, there will be a spark as it gets close and makes contact with the negative battery terminal. Don't be afraid of this - it's nothing to worry about. Make sure the terminal caps are done up nice and tight.

Check your battery terminals

Most modern cars run on a 12 volt negative ground electrical system. If your battery terminals or contacts aren't clean, you're making it more difficult for the current to pass around the electrical system. Remove the terminal caps as described above and clean each contact post with a wire brush to get a nice clean metal contact surface. Do the same to the terminal caps, then reattach them as described above.
