Epidemic Turn Signal Neglect Rate Now Approaching 50%, Causing Millions of Crashes per YearSociety of Automotive Engineers Report: with Effects Worse than Distracted Driving, Turn Signal Neglect is No Longer Just an AnnoyanceDayton, Ohio (PRWEB) April 24, 2012In a revealing new report published by the Society of Automotive Engineers this week at the 2012 SAE World Congress, an in-depth observation study of turn signal rate-of-neglect not only exposes how widespread the problem is, but how simple the solution is.A total of 12,000 turning and lane-changing vehicles were observed with visible turn signal usage (or neglect) data recorded. The study shows that the neglect rate for lane changing vehicles is 48% and the neglect rate for turning vehicles is 25%. That translates to an astonishing 750 billion times a year that drivers neglect turn signals on U.S. roadways, or over 2 billion times per day. Each incident of neglect elevates the risk of a multi-vehicle crash.Obviously, not every absent turn signal results in a crash, but the study concludes that the collective result of turn signal neglect is as many as 2 million crashes per year. In comparison, the U.S. Department of Transportation states that Distracted Driving causes about 950,000 crashes per year, so Turn Signal Neglect is actually a more significant safety issue. While the causes and remedies to combat Distracted Driving remain a matter of ongoing debate, the remedy for Turn Signal Neglect is simple, direct, effective, and cost-saving: The singular cause is driver neglect and the solution is the Smart Turn Signal.Smart Turn Signals use vehicle sensors and computer control to not only shut off the turn signal appropriately and accurately under every conceivable driving situation, but also assists the driver to assure that the turn signal is used regularly. The Turn Signal Assist feature is similar to a seat belt reminder – If you habitually neglect the use of your turn signal when you execute turns, you will eventually get a friendly reminder display. For drivers who use turn signals nearly every time, no display will ever appear, so it is never a nuisance for most drivers. Drivers who neglect their turn signals will quickly improve their habits and therefore reduce their overall risk of involvement in a crash as well as reducing the risk of getting a traffic citation.Smart Turn Signals actually use the information from the very same vehicle sensors used for the Stability Control System (now standard on all new cars), so no cost is added to the vehicle. In fact, there are savings in cost, space and weight because the turn signal trip mechanism is eliminated. Advances in vehicle computer control have exposed the defects of the trip mechanism, which first went into production in 1940 and has remained unimproved for 72 years."This is a first of its kind report on a subject that amazingly, has never been studied. The turn signal is one of the very original automotive crash prevention devices and this simple driver to driver communication device remains extremely effective, but only when it is accurately displayed as required by law", states Richard Ponziani, P.E., President of RLP Engineering and author of the report. "The turn signal can no longer be considered 'optional' and all drivers have an ongoing duty to use it, just as they have a duty to stop at a stop sign or at a red light" he added. Ponziani further stated: "Smart Turn Signals are the perfect complement to the Stability Control System since Stability Control predominately prevents single-vehicle crashes, whereas the Smart Turn Signal prevents multi-vehicle crashes".The Smart Turn Signal system has been in development for the past several years and the highly favorable cost to benefit ratio makes the urgent need for Smart Turn Signals even more obvious. It is anticipated that this life-saving technology will be integrated into production vehicles in the near future. This breakthrough represents a perfect opportunity to significantly reduce multi-vehicle crash rates, reduce vehicle cost and make driving a lot more friendly and courteous across the U.S.The SAE report, publication number 2012-01-0261 is available at http://www.sae.org. What's New for 2012
The 2012 Mazda CX-9 is essentially unchanged.
Introduction
Many people imagine that unwieldy handling is an inescapable part of large-SUV ownership, but the 2012 Mazda CX-9 proves this assumption is a false one. The Mazda brand has long been known for offering vehicles that deliver relatively sporty handling, and the CX-9 upholds this tradition, despite its hefty size.
In addition to this pleasant perk, the CX-9 comes with all the features you'd expect from a competitive large crossover. Build quality is impressive and there's adult-size seating in all three rows; you also get a respectable 101 cubic feet of maximum cargo capacity. Cabin design is handsome and upscale, and the driver enjoys a comfortable, carlike seating position. The CX-9's only notable drawbacks are long rear doors that can be cumbersome in tight parking spots, and the ride stiffness that comes with the Grand Touring's 20-inch wheels.
If engaging handling isn't on your list of priorities, you'll want to look at some capable competitors. With its spacious third-row seat, the Ford Flex offers minivan-like capacity, along with distinctive styling and scores of high-tech features. GM's large crossovers, the Buick Enclave, Chevrolet Traverse and GMC Acadia, bring a smoother ride and a bigger cargo area than the Mazda. And for something just a little bit smaller, the recently redesigned Dodge Durango and Ford Explorer are also worthy choices. However, if you want a three-row crossover that melds family-friendly functionality with a thoroughly enjoyable driving experience, you won't do better than the Mazda CX-9.
Body Styles, Trim Levels, and Options
The 2012 Mazda CX-9 is a large seven-passenger crossover SUV that's available in three trim levels: Sport, Touring and Grand Touring.
The entry-level Sport model includes 18-inch alloy wheels, three-zone automatic climate control, full power accessories, remote keyless entry, a leather-wrapped tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel, a trip computer, Bluetooth and a six-speaker sound system with a CD player and an auxiliary audio jack.
Stepping up to the Touring version adds automatic headlights, heated mirrors, leather upholstery (for the front- and second-row seats) and heated power front seats. The Grand Touring adds 20-inch wheels, xenon headlights, foglights, automatic wipers, keyless ignition/entry, driver-seat memory presets, a second-row armrest, wood interior accents, an auto-dimming rearview mirror and a blind-spot warning system.
Available options are dependent on trim level and include a sunroof, a power tailgate, a navigation system with a rearview camera, a stand-alone rearview camera (with a display in the rearview mirror), remote ignition, roof rails and a rear-seat entertainment system. Also available is an upgraded 10-speaker Bose surround-sound audio system with a six-CD changer, satellite radio and an in-dash audio display.
Powertrains and Performance
Every 2012 Mazda CX-9 is powered by a 3.7-liter V6 that produces 273 horsepower and 270 pound-feet of torque. A six-speed automatic with manual shift control is the only transmission available, but buyers can choose between front- and all-wheel drive. Properly equipped, the CX-9 can tow up to 3,500 pounds.
In Edmunds testing, a front-wheel-drive CX-9 accelerated from zero to 60 mph in 7.4 seconds, while an AWD model required 8.5 seconds. Compared to competing models, these figures are just about average. Fuel economy is on par with that of other large crossovers at an EPA-estimated 17 mpg city/24 mpg highway and 19 mpg in combined driving for front-wheel-drive models. The all-wheel-drive CX-9 drops to 16/22/19 mpg.
Safety
Standard safety equipment for every 2012 Mazda CX-9 includes antilock disc brakes, stability control with a rollover sensor, front-seat side airbags, full-length side curtain airbags and active head restraints.
The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety awarded the CX-9 its highest rating of "Good" for both frontal-offset and side-impact crashworthiness, but a second-lowest score of "Marginal" for roof-strength integrity. In Edmunds brake testing, an AWD Grand Touring model came to a stop from 60 mph in 123 feet, which is impressive for this class.
Interior Design and Special Features
The 2012 Mazda CX-9 features a cabin that's stylish and elegant, with a look that's more high end than that of many others in this segment. A graceful waterfall motif on the dash and doors presents visual flair, and except for some low-rent plastics on the center stack, materials quality is respectable. The center console bin -- with its unique split-opening lid -- is quite capacious, but overall, there aren't a lot of storage opportunities inside the cabin.
Within the first two rows, there's ample room even for taller passengers, but headroom is tighter for those seated in the third row. The second-row seat reclines and slides fore and aft to deliver optimal comfort. Access to the third row comes easily thanks to large openings for the rear doors and the fold-and-slide second row; however, the larger doors can be troublesome in tight parking spaces. With the second and third rows folded flat, the CX-9 offers up 101 cubic feet of cargo capacity.
Driving Impressions
Like many large crossovers, the 2012 Mazda CX-9 provides admirable road trip transportation, offering a comfortable ride on long journeys. It separates itself from the pack by driving like a smaller, more agile vehicle thanks to its precise, communicative steering and buttoned-down composure in corners. The compliant suspension soaks up bumps and potholes to provide a poised, comfortable ride, but we would steer buyers away from the 20-inch tires of the Grand Touring trim, which tend to make the ride somewhat choppy over the rough stuff.

The Mazda Shinari Design concept car on display in Bejiing
The SHINARI is a four-door, four-seater sports coupe that perfectly expresses the KODO design theme in a graceful and carefree form. The Japanese word "shinari" references the powerful yet supple appearance of great resilient force when objects of high tensile strength, such as steel or bamboo, are twisted or bent. It also refers to the appearance of a person or animal as it flexes and transforms its body to generate high-speed movement.
One glance at SHINARI stirs one's emotions. Its form expresses the powerful movement of a lean yet extremely muscular body, appearing both supple but at the same time filled with tension. Mazda's desire is to strike a chord in car enthusiasts' hearts and go beyond the notion of rational logic. SHINARI's form purely embodies that desire.

The left lane...not for the slow
Delaware may be joining Kansas, Oklahoma, Washington, and other states in cracking down on drivers who use the left lane for more than passing. A bill in the Delaware legislature would institute fines of up to $230 for drivers who camp out in the left lane on roads with at least two lanes in each direction, according to USA Today.
Delaware's current law requires drivers to keep right only when going slower that the flow of traffic, according to the report. The new measure would resemble nearby New Jersey's law – the Garden State currently fines left lane dawdlers up to $200, though a recent proposal would raise that to $300.
The Delaware bill is supported by AAA Mid-Atlantic and the Delaware Police Chiefs Council. For what it's worth, we think it's a good idea as well, but don't take our opinion for it, let us know what you think.

Mazda working on multiple rotary engines, has no plans for SkyActiv V6
Come in and check out our Skyactiv vehicles and up your gas mileage to 40+ to the gallon! Click HERE to view our inventory and schedule a test drive.
The minds at Car and Driver recently took a moment to speak with Robert Davis, senior vice president of Mazda U.S. operations, about the automaker's plans for the future. According to Davis, the rotary engine will continue to play a role in the company's products moving forward, with engineers applying the lessons learned through the SkyActiv program to the powerplant. That means the next-generation rotary will likely feature reduced internal friction and lightweight internals in a quest to reduce emissions and increase fuel economy. But the engine may find applications outside of its traditional role.
Not only is Mazda pursuing a rotary engine to power a vehicle, Davis admits Mazda is also investigating ways to use the design in tandem with an electric motor with the pistonless engine responsible for charging an extended-range EV's batteries. Given the compact size and relatively low torque supplied by a rotary, this application would seem to hold promise. Of course, we've heard some of this before. And what of a SkyActiv V6? Davis makes it clear there's no room in the SkyActiv stable for a six-cylinder, saying that the company will focus on lighter platforms and forced-induction four-cylinder engines instead.*Courtesy of Autoblog.com

Tips to make your car sparkle inside and out!
No matter how or why you drive, most people try to keep their vehicle looking good–inside and out.
You can always pay to get a professional to detail your car, but if you're the only one that cleans 'your baby' then the following will help you out.
Start with the Interior
When detailing your car, it would be best to start with the interior. The main reason for doing it that way is so you won’t end up with dust and dirt on the exterior after you’ve cleaned all the cracks and crevices.
Use the Right Tools
If you needed to pound nails into a board, you wouldn’t use an electric drill to do it. Instead, you would use a hammer. Using
the right tools for detailing your car is no different. In order to do it right, you need more than a couple of rags and a bucket of water; you need a vacuum cleaner with an assortment of attachments, some of which will need to fit into tiny cracks. You will also need those rags that were mentioned previously, but some of them should be courser than others–some will need to be thin enough to fit into tiny cracks. You should also have a variety of small brushes on hand–a toothbrush will work well for small places. Q-tips also make handy detailing tools, as do small, flat screwdrivers. To finish the job, you will need various cleaners and a can of compressed air.
Remove Trash from the Inside
The first step in detailing a car is to remove any trash from the interior. Empty the ashtrays and get rid of any discarded food wrappers or empty pop bottles. Remove the floor mats and move the seats as far forward as they’ll go. Check under the seats to make sure you haven’t missed any scraps of paper or loose change.
Vacuum Thoroughly
Use a vacuum cleaner to suck up all the accumulated dirt and dust. Be sure and vacuum the seats as well. Don’t forget to use a brush attachment to vacuum hard surfaces, such as the dashboard and door panels. After you’ve finished getting the larger areas, it’s time to concentrate on the cracks and crevices. Attach smaller, thinner hoses and brushes to the vacuum cleaner as needed and work your way throughout the interior cleaning the smaller areas.
Use a Little Elbow Grease
After you’re finished with the vacuum cleaner, it’s time to use a little elbow grease. Use your Q-tips and small rags to clean out the smallest cracks and crevices inside the car. In order to make sure you reach the bottom of small cracks, you can use a flat screwdriver or knife blade covered by a thin, wet rag. When you’ve loosened the dirt in the crevices, you can use the can of compressed air to finish the job. To be sure you’ve gotten all the dust and dirt, it wouldn’t hurt to run the vacuum cleaner over everything one more time.
Polish Everything
With the dirty work out of the way, it’s time to make the interior shine. If you have stains in the carpet or upholstery, it may take some effort to clean them. Ask your friends and neighbors to recommend a stain remover, or visit an auto parts store to find the right cleaner. Use small, thin, clean rags to polish the cracks and crevices, and larger rags for the dashboard and other hard surfaces. Cleaning the windows should be done with window cleaner and clean rags.
Now Do the Exterior
After you’ve finished cleaning and polishing the interior, it’s time to move outside the vehicle. Make sure you roll up the windows tight so your outside cleaning efforts won’t dirty up the inside all over again.
Start At the Bottom
The best way to detail the exterior of your car is to start with the tires and rims. They have the most tiny cracks and crevices, so they’ll be the hardest part of the job. Because most rims have intricate designs you can use the same tools you used for detailing the interior of the car. After that, you can wash the tires and rims with warm soapy water. Check with an auto parts store or a car dealer to find out what solution works best, not only for the tires and rims, but for the rest of the car as well.
Time to Get Wet
Now time for the fun part–providing you don’t mind getting wet. Use a hose to douse the car. This will loosen any dirt and dust that is clinging to the car. After the car is wet, use a clean cloth that have been dipped in the cleaning solution that was recommended to you and wash the vehicle completely. The next step is to rinse it thoroughly and then dry it with clean, dry cloth.
Waxing Is Next
The next step is to wax the car using your favorite car wax. Make sure you get into all the cracks and crevices so the exterior will be thoroughly protected against the elements.
Buff It Good
In order to make it shine, take a few extra minutes to buff the wax into the car’s finish. The more time you spend buffing the better the car will look. Make sure you wipe excess wax from the cracks and crevices.
Finishing Touches
After you’ve finished, take a good, close look at the interior of the car to make sure you didn’t miss anything. Then, do the same outside. The car should sparkle.

What's New for 2012
The 2012 Mazda MX-5 Miata now features stability and traction control as standard on all models, while a new Special Edition model will find its way into the garages of 450 lucky owners.
Introduction
The 2012 Mazda Miata shows you don't need to invest in a high-dollar sports car to enjoy spirited performance. When the Miata debuted more than 20 years ago, it quickly established itself as a driver's car that was affordable to buy and inexpensive to own. The little roadster is now in its third generation, and it remains as appealing as it was back when it was first launched.
One of the Miata's hallmarks is its steering, which excels at being communicative and responsive to input. Handling is a joy; the car's sharp reflexes and composed demeanor in turns make sinuous canyon roads a very special treat. Add to the mix an engine that loves to rev and what you get is a recipe for visceral driving excitement. It's also easy to live with, from a soft top that's easy to operate to a ride that's comfortable enough for daily commuting. This small sports car's only significant downside is a trunk that's too small to provide meaningful utility.
Since direct rivals like the Pontiac Solstice have long been discontinued and more upscale roadsters like the BMW Z4 and Nissan 370Z have much larger price tags, the Miata stands in a league of its own. You might consider cross-shopping it against convertible variants of the Mini Cooper and Fiat 500, but neither of these models can match the Miata's handling; however, the Cooper drop top offers extra utility via fold-flat rear seats. Another alternative could be the Ford Mustang V6 convertible, with its much larger trunk.
In the end, if smiles per mile is your primary metric, the MX-5 Miata is the undisputed leader of the pack. Decades after its initial appearance, it continues to deliver performance thrills at a price that's attainable for the common man.
Body Styles, Trim Levels, and Options
The 2012 Mazda MX-5 Miata is a two-seat roadster that is offered in three trim levels: base Sport, well-equipped Touring and premium Grand Touring. All come standard with a manually operated soft top, while the top two trims can be had with a power-retractable hardtop (PRHT). There is also a Miata Special Edition, of which only 450 will be produced.
In Sport trim, standard features include 16-inch cast-aluminum wheels, a vinyl convertible top with a glass rear window, air-conditioning, cloth seats, a six-speaker sound system with a CD/MP3 player and an auxiliary audio jack, a height-adjustable driver seat, a leather-wrapped steering wheel and power windows and mirrors.
The Touring model adds 17-inch alloy wheels, a shock tower brace for the front suspension, foglights, cruise control, power door locks, keyless entry, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, a trip computer, a six-CD changer, steering-wheel-mounted audio controls and a leather-wrapped shift knob. The Grand Touring steps up with the choice of a black or beige cloth top, automatic climate control, leather upholstery, heated seats, a seven-speaker Bose audio system and silver interior accents. The PRHT models are identically equipped.
Most options are grouped in packages. Sport models can be equipped with the Convenience package that includes most of the Touring upgrades (this package is standard in Miata Sport models with automatic transmissions). Touring and Grand Touring models can enhance the Miata's already nimble handling with the Suspension package, which includes a sport-tuned suspension with Bilstein shocks and a limited-slip differential (only available with a manual transmission). The Grand Touring qualifies for the Premium package that features keyless ignition/entry, xenon headlights, Bluetooth and satellite radio. An Appearance package adds a unique front spoiler and extended rocker sills.
The Miata Special Edition is essentially a Grand Touring model available only in red or white. A black-painted PRHT is mandatory and is joined by matching black 17-inch wheels, mirrors, exterior trim pieces and leather upholstery. A limited-slip differential and a sport-tuned suspension with Bilstein dampers are both standard, along with the Premium package.
Powertrains and Performance
The 2012 Mazda Miata is powered by 2.0-liter inline-4 engine that produces 167 horsepower (158 with the automatic transmission) and 140 pound-feet of torque. Sport models come standard with a five-speed manual transmission, while Touring and Grand Touring models come with a six-speed manual transmission. All models have the option of a six-speed automatic with shift paddles on the steering wheel.
In Edmunds testing, a Miata with a five-speed manual transmission sprinted from a standstill to 60 mph in a reasonably quick 6.9 seconds. Fuel economy is about average, with an EPA-estimated 22 mpg city/28 mpg highway and 24 mpg in combined driving for the five-speed manual. The six-speed manual and automatic drop 1 mpg in city mileage.
Safety
Antilock disc brakes and side airbags are standard, along with stability and traction control. In Edmunds braking tests, various Miata models turned in stopping distances from 60 mph between 110 and 116 feet, which are very respectable numbers for a sports car.
Interior Design and Special Features
If you're an average-sized driver, you'll find that the 2012 Mazda Miata's compact footprint leaves it with a cabin that envelops you in a close but comfortable embrace. Taller drivers have found that the seat runs out of rearward travel, though. The gauges are legible and controls are user-friendly and well-placed.
Those who choose the manual convertible top will appreciate its simplicity; all it takes is the push of a button and the tug of a lever to liberate the lightweight top from its moorings. It takes just a few seconds to lower the top, and raising it is just as quick and easy. With practice, some longer- and stronger-limbed drivers can raise the roof without even leaving the seat. The power-retractable hardtop takes a bit longer to transform from coupe to roadster, but the added convenience, noise isolation and security make it a good choice as a daily driver.
Convertibles are notoriously short on trunk space, and the Miata is no exception. With just 5.3 cubic feet available, there's barely room for a light traveler's luggage and it takes some effort to get golf bags to fit -- if they fit at all. Points are also deducted for the disappointing stereo performance when the top is down. Even the upgraded Bose system suffers from poorly aimed speakers that fail to fill the cabin with sound.
Driving Impressions
The Miata is legendary for its ability to squeeze maximum enjoyment from winding blacktop, and it owes much of this skill to the uncanny communicativeness of its steering and suspension. Some hard-core enthusiasts might find the car's body roll to be excessive when driving hard, but just about everybody else will enjoy the car's nimble handling. Overall, the 2012 Mazda Miata is one of the best-handling cars you can buy for the money.
The free-revving four-cylinder engine doesn't pack a whole lot of punch compared to some other sports cars, but it's always eager to play, and the short-throw manual gearbox is as good as it gets. On a daily basis, the Miata is easy to live with and comfortable for long stints in either top-up or top-down mode.

Regardless of purpose - from the large-on-fun, small-in-size Mazda2 to the three-row, tow-the-kids-and-the-in-laws family hauler CX-9 - all Mazdas have a distinct feeling behind the wheel. But can we make that connection even better, in a more efficient, dynamic car? Enter SKYACTIV TECHNOLOGY.
Developed as part of Mazda's "Sustainable Zoom-Zoom" strategy, SKYACTIV TECHNOLOGY was developed based on creating overall vehicle efficiency, and perfectly complements the car-and-driver marriage of performance and passion. Not just a new engine. Not just a new transmission. Not just a new body or a new chassis. More than a bigger bolt or a fancy fender flare that others feel qualify as "all new," CX-5 truly answers the questions of more space, more utility, better handling, better safety, increased performance and increased fuel economy. This is why the clean slate that is SKYACTIV TECHNOLOGY will be the pillar of Mazda's next-generation of vehicles.
Efficiency in Engineering
Developed solely by Mazda, SKYACTIV TECHNOLOGY is not a package or trim level but an all-encompassing, deeply imbedded philosophy that obtaining more power, more torque and more miles per gallon does not mean sacrificing fuel economy, design or safety. Its first North American application was in Mazda's best-selling vehicle, the Mazda3, which was refreshed for the 2012 model year with a SKYACTIV engine and transmissions. CX-5 is the first global vehicle to receive all SKYACTIV TECHNOLOGY components.
Under an expansive hood lies the SKYACTIV-G 2.0-liter gasoline engine. Developers of the SKYACTIV-G engine were aiming for a lightweight design that produced more from less. At 13:1, SKYACTIV-G features the world's highest compression ratio for a mass-produced car. Coupled with an all-new 4-2-1 exhaust system as well as redesigned pistons and other components, challenges associated with high compression (such as knocking and operation on 87-octane fuel) were resolved. As a result, SKYACTIV-G is 10 percent lighter, delivers more torque, improves fuel economy and lowers emissions when compared to the MZR 2.0-liter gasoline engine.
CX-5 delivers 155 horsepower at 6,000 rpm and 150 lb-ft of torque at 4,000 rpm. Redline is achieved at 6,500 rpm. With a svelte 3,208-pound body (FWD, SKYACTIV-MT models), CX-5 is one of the lightest vehicles in the segment. With a choice of transmissions in either the SKYACTIV-MT six-speed manual or SKYACTIV-Drive six-speed automatic, a 2,000-pound towing capacity and an optional all-new all-wheel-drive (AWD) system, the 2013 CX-5 truly offers a little of everything for everyone.
The SKYACTIV-MT six-speed manual transmission (Sport models) brings the crisp, tight shifting and direct, sporty feeling of the MX-5 to the CX-5. To accomplish this, not only was the shift-lever stroke shortened by about 10 percent compared to the current six-speed manual transmission but other technologies were applied as well: a down-type system that uses the forces of gravity to ease upshifts, lock ball-type synchronizer for smooth gear changes, shift load canceller to make the lever action lighter, slide ball bearing and locating 2nd and 3rd gears on a common shaft that drastically reduces the size and weight of the unit. SKYACTIV-MT is lighter by approximately 4.4 pounds, while still achieving a quicker and precise response feel. Only Mazda would go to this level of detail on a manual transmission in an SUV, but only in the details can the depth of SKYACTIV TECHNOLOGY's engineering philosophy truly be seen.
The SKYACTIV-Drive six-speed automatic transmission combines the best features of today's transmission technologies by integrating the key advantages of a conventional automatic transmission, Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT) and Dual Clutch Transmission (DCT). At low speeds, SKYACTIV-Drive acts like a conventional torque-converter automatic, with all the benefits of easy and smooth speed control that these conventional systems offer. At higher speeds (more than five to eight mph), the torque converter is locked and the transmission operates with all the benefits of a dual clutch - fast shifts, minimal power-delivery interruption and rev-matched downshifts. Additionally, SKYACTIV-Drive is smaller and lighter, and contributes a fuel efficiency increase of approximately four to seven percent over conventional transmissions.
And because SKYACTIV-Drive is only available in a Mazda, it offers a fully manual mode, with gears selected by pushing forwards on the console-mounted lever to downshift, pulling backwards to upshift - the same way all racecars are operated. The benefits of SKYACTIV-Drive can only be found in a Mazda, and offer a marked improvement in both drivability and fuel economy versus its competitors.
Both SKYACTIV-MT and SKYACTIV-Drive were developed at the same time, and both were clean-sheet-of-paper designs, which enables Mazda to design the two units to be built on a common assembly line - the only manufacturer in the world to build manual and automatic transmissions on a common line. This leads to drastically increased efficiencies in production.
Boasting the best highway fuel economy of any SUV in North America, the 2013 CX-5 offers an EPA estimated 35 mpg on FWD models and 31 mpg on AWD models. Front-wheel-drive (FWD) models equipped with the standard SKYACTIV-MT are EPA rated with an estimated fuel economy of 26 city/35 highway/29 combined mpg. When equipped with the optional SKYACTIV-Drive, CX-5 FWD models receive an mpg rating of 26 city/32 highway/29 combined. SKYACTIV-Drive is standard on AWD models, which return an estimated EPA fuel economy rating of 25 city/31 highway/28 combined mpg. The combined city and highway fuel economy of 29 mpg on FWD models and 28 mpg on AWD also are best-in-class when compared to non-hybrid competitors.
Reliable Safety
While safety never comes second, having the peace of mind to never have to worry about it in the first place is just as important. Being a compact SUV that doesn't compromise, CX-5's SKYACTIV-Body and SKYACTIV-Chassis ensure a vehicle structure as reinforced and quiet as it is rigid and absorbs impacts.
Precise and predictable, drivers will feel secure in a vehicle that reacts as they react - steering and braking controls are linear, reacting to small inputs with small actions, large actions to large inputs. It sounds easy, yet so few manufacturers are able to get it right. This is the definition of Zoom-Zoom in its truest form, the oneness between car and driver.
Re-examining the suspension and steering systems, the lightweight construction of the SKYACTIV-Chassis includes a front strut suspension and a multi-link rear format along with an assortment of design changes. While structures and sub-assemblies may seem familiar, every individual component was examined to ensure it provides the greatest efficiency, lightest weight and appropriate levels of driver-involvement.
The SKYACTIV-Body is comprised of 61 percent high-tensile steel, creating a lighter, stronger body with superior handling. As a result, the overall structure is eight percent lighter than previous Mazda models. The all-new CX-5 also has the distinction of being the first vehicle ever to utilize 1,800MPa ultra-high tensile steel in manufacturing. Located in the front and rear bumper beams, they are 20 percent stronger and 10.6 pounds lighter than previous generation bumpers. With the all-new CX-5, from the inside out, Mazda has spared no detail.
Standard safety offerings include six airbags (front, side and full side-curtain), four wheel disk brakes, anti-lock brakes (ABS), daytime running lights (DRL), Dynamic Stability Control (DSC), a Traction Control System (TCS) and a tire pressure monitoring system (TPMS). Also available are a Blind Spot Monitoring (BSM) system, Adaptive Front-lighting System (AFS) with auto-leveling bi-xenon headlamps and a rear view camera with distance guide lines.
Purposeful Styling
A new five-point "signature wing" front grille commands the front fascia. Its black elongated trapezoidal pattern adds masculine depth while eagle-eyed, wraparound headlamps extend out, seemingly flirting a head-turning "hello" to passersby. This is KODO.
KODO, or "Soul of Motion," is a design language inspired by nature, which evokes how both startling beauty and immense power can be captured within a single motion. First unveiled in 2010 on the SHINARI concept car, a long-and-lean, four-door sports coupe, and then on the MINAGI concept SUV, from which the CX-5 is based, KODO exemplifies the direction of Mazda's future sheet metal strokes. An early indication with CX-5 is that all-new production offerings from Mazda will be nothing short of striking.
The CX-5's sculptured body features taut, compact lines. Shapely front and rear fenders hug the sporty SUV's 17- and 19-inch rubber-and-rim pairings, projecting a wide, low-slung stance. Seventeen-inch aluminum alloy wheels outfitted with 225/65R17 Yokohama all-season tires are standard on Sport and Touring models. Grand Touring models feature 19-inch aluminum alloy wheels wrapped with 225/55R19 Toyo® A23 all-season tires.
A sweeping swoosh line bridges the four corners with sleek, artistic expression. Topside, a pronounced crease begins at the A-pillar and darts sharply across the side panels, eventually wrapping itself around stylized tail lamps. The sharply raked A-pillar is matched by the angles of the fastback design of the C-pillar and rear window, topping an aggressive profile, which, at the same time, affords all occupants one of the widest fields of a view in the segment.
All these cuts in the sheet metal, the rounded surfaces and edgy creases, are as much for finesse as they are for function. CX-5's exterior design was developed to create optimal airflow, making the overall shape as smooth as possible. Additionally, all models are equipped with a rear spoiler sporting side fins, which aids in exceptional aerodynamic performance but also complements the aggressive stance of the vehicle.
Not a drag to drive, the Zoom-Zoom DNA of the CX-5 further adds to the benefit of improved fuel economy. With a 0.33 coefficient of drag, CX-5 is one of the most aerodynamic compact crossover SUVs currently on the market.
Redefined Interior
Just as the exterior stirs the soul, the 2013 CX-5's interior sparks the senses. Persuasive and impressive, CX-5's interior grabs you - but you're the one that refuses to let go. The driver-oriented cockpit is intuitive, with a multitude of frequently-used controls within reach. There is nothing you can't do while ensconced in utmost comfort.
Black is the base color throughout the cabin with sculpted, body-embracing seating available in two colors with a choice of two cloth fabric patterns or genuine leather. The black-on-black layout is the traditional go-to color scheme for luxury, sporty and refinement. The sand-on-black layout offers a vibrant, color-contrasting option. Both interior options present the well-tailored fit-and-finish of the cabin with defined luxury and excellent comfort.
With the CX-5, there is no devil left to be found in the details as every surface and crevice is utilized to be efficient as well as stylish. The cabin features an abundance of soft materials on the door trims and upper dash panel. Piano black accents and satin chrome finishes further convey a high-end, well-crafted expression. The instrument cluster receives meter lighting that makes the gauges equally visible in the daylight as they are easy-on-the-eyes in the darkness. The three-spoke steering wheel is appealing as it is functional, featuring a tilt and telescopic column as well as steering-wheel-mounted audio and cruise controls as standard equipment.
Long and luxury-laced, CX-5 sits on a segment-leading 106.3-inch wheelbase, seats five and offers a cabin that is undeniably flexible in order to accommodate the demands of today's active lifestyles of all work and all play. Rear cargo room is not only cavernous but clever. Not the first to offer 40/20/40-split rear seats, CX-5 simply does it better by offering the segment's only fold-flat three-piece independent seats. A single-action topside button releases the left- and right-side seats to fold down while a looped handled frees the middle seat. CX-5 shows that whatever life punts its way, it will catch.
While the driver delights in all the selfish glee of driving one of the most dynamically fun and satisfying compact crossover SUVs on the road, there is no reason passengers can't be allowed to enjoy the ride as well. Amongst the roomiest of cabins for the segment, legroom for the second row is ample at 39.3 inches with an equally generous knee clearance of 2.6 inches. The wide cavity under the front seats also offers abundant rear passenger foot space and can be used as additional cargo room to hide personal effects. Rear headroom is a roomy 39.0 inches.
Up front, both the driver and passenger can enjoy 40.1 inches of headroom (39.0 inches when equipped with a moonroof), 57.5 inches for the broadest of shoulders and 41.0 inches to stretch long limbs. Six- or eight-way power-adjustable seats are standard on all but the Sport model.
Whether battling those curvaceous roads alone or rolling through town with a full house, commanding the sound studio on wheels is easily within reach for either the driver or front passenger. An all-new 5.8-inch in-dash touch screen becomes the center of attention with intuitive phone, audio and navigation functions (when equipped). Streamlined steering wheel controls also enable a more straightforward operation of the infotainment system. Standard push-button start and an optional advanced keyless entry system get the CX-5 going.
Other available features include Bluetooth® phone and audio connectivity and iPod® audio playback. USB and auxiliary jack connections are standard and located in the center console storage bin. iPod information can be accessed via the infotainment screen (when equipped).
A nine-speaker Bose® Centerpoint® Surround Sound System with AudioPilot® was jointly developed with Mazda to please even the most discerning music enthusiast. The all-new 225-watt sound system uses premium lightweight materials and components yet offers sound clarity and performance similar to larger, bulkier sound systems. CX-5 also is available with HD RadioTM Technology, a subscription-free digital AM and FM broadcast radio service which provides crystal-clear sound, on-screen information and additional programming choices via HD2 and HD3 channels.
In a first-time partnership with MNAO, a TomTom technology-based in-dash navigation system also will be offered and features premium North American maps, advanced lane guidance, intuitive voice recognition and real-time traffic. The navigation module communicates with the Sanyo display head unit in the CX-5 via a USB interface and utilizes an SD card for storing map data. The SD card feature allows consumers to input customized maps or regularly update TomTom mapping content and software via their home computer.
Purchasing Power
Luxury, performance and fuel economy needn't come at a steep cost and should be within reach to all consumers. With that in mind, the CX-5 Sport starts a competitive $20,695[2] MSRP, which is well below the segment's current sales leaders. Paired with the SKYACTIV-MT six-speed manual transmission, the entry-level Sport model is equipped with high-level standard amenities such as 17-inch aluminum alloy wheels, daytime running lights (DRL), power side view mirrors, automatic headlight shutoff as well as stylish exterior cues in a body-colored rear spoiler, shark-fin antenna, door handles and outside mirrors with turn lamps.
The comfortably-appointed cabin offers cloth seat upholstery, push-button start, power windows with a driver's side one-touch auto open/close, cruise control, a tilt and telescopic steering column, steering-wheel-mounted audio and cruise control functions, air conditioning, a four-speaker AM/FM/CD/MP3-compatible radio with Automatic Level Control (ALC) as well as auxiliary and USB connection ports - all standard.
CX-5 Sport models equipped with the optional SKYACTIV-Drive six-speed automatic transmission start at $22,095 MSRP. When equipped with Mazda's all-new active torque-split AWD system (SKYACTIV-Drive models), the starting price is $23,345 MSRP. A Bluetooth Audio Package is available for an additional $400 MSRP and includes Bluetooth hands-free phone and audio connectivity, a 5.8-inch in-dash color information touch screen and HD Radio Technology.
Moving up to the Touring model, the Bluetooth Audio Package for Sport models becomes standard as are fog lamps, privacy glass, upgraded cloth seats, a six-way power-adjustable driver's seat, rearview camera (viewable via the 5.8-inch in-dash color monitor), an upgraded six-speaker AM/FM/CD/MP3-compatible radio, a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob, steering-wheel-mounted audio, Bluetooth and cruise control functions, a Blind Spot Monitoring (BSM) system as well as a rear-seat armrest with cup holders. SKYACTIV-Drive becomes standard on Touring models, which start at $23,895 MSRP (FWD) and $25,145 MSRP (AWD).
Available options for CX-5 Touring are the Moonroof/Bose and Technology packages. The Moonroof/Bose Package ($1,130 MSRP) adds a moonroof and the 225-watt Bose Surround Sound System. The Technology Package ($1,185 MSRP) adds the TomTom technology-based in-dash navigation module, an auto-dimming mirror with Homelink®, automatic on/off bi-xenon auto-leveling headlights, a pivoting Adaptive Front-lighting System (AFS), rain-sensing windshield wipers and an anti-theft alarm. Sirius Satellite Radio, which includes a four-month complimentary subscription, is a stand-alone option ($525) for Touring models.
For those with a sweet tooth for even more decadent luxury items is the CX-5 Grand Touring. The 17-inch aluminum alloy wheels of the Sport and Touring models are swapped for 19-inch aluminum alloy wheels. Other premium standard features include automatic headlights, heated outside mirrors, rain-sensing windshield wipers and a moonroof. Standard cabin amenities include leather-trimmed seat upholstery, heated front seats, an eight-way power-adjustable driver's seat with power lumbar support, dual-zone automatic climate control, a Bose Surround Sound System and Sirius Satellite Radio. Available in either FWD or AWD configurations, the Grand Touring model starts at $27,045 and $28,295 MSRP, respectively.
A Technology Package, similar to the Touring model, also is available on the CX-5 Grand Touring. Priced at $1,325 MSRP, options include the in-dash TomTom navigation system, bi-xenon auto-leveling headlights with a pivoting Adaptive Front-lighting System (AFS), an auto-dimming rearview mirror with Homelink, an anti-theft alarm and Mazda Advanced Keyless Entry.
A $425 MSRP trailer hitch (with harness and cover) option is available on all CX-5 models for consumers to fully utilize the vehicle's 2,000-pound towing capacity.
The all-new 2013 CX-5 compact crossover SUV is on sale now.

Mazda Takeri Concept Walkthrough: 2012 New York Auto Show
While it's already been shown at three other auto shows around the world, the Mazda Takeri Concept finally made its North American debut at the 2012 New York Auto Show. Looking as stunning as ever, the four-door concept features Mazda's new KODO "Soul Of Motion" design language, and previews the next-generation Mazda6 mid-size sedan.
Up front the Takeri sports the new corporate face of Mazda, with a five-point grille and bladed front end design. Flared front fenders and large 20-inch alloy wheels give the Takeri an aggressive stance and lean proportions. In the rear, the trunk lid runs into the taillights--a design cue intended to give the Takeri more visual width.
The interior of the Takeri Concept features sculpted white seats and metallic accents. A three-spoke steering wheel, aluminum pedals, and paddle shifters all hint at Mazda's sporting intentions with the car.
Under the hood the Takeri Concept features a SKYACTIV-D 2.2-liter turbo clean diesel engine which is connected to a lightweight six-speed automatic transmission. Mazda's i-stop start-stop system and i-eloop capacitor-based brake regeneration system both help increase fuel economy.
This concept gives us a glimmer of hope that the next-generation Mazda6 will not only be stunning to look at, but will also feature a diesel engine, and if we are lucky a six-speed manual.
For more information on the Mazda Takeri Concept be sure to watch the video and also read our full preview. You can also learn more about Mazda's KODO design language by checking out our interview with Mazda's North American Design Director, Derek Jenkins.

April's Special, the 2012 Mazda 6
The 2012 Mazda6 gets 30+ MPG and out performs every other car in it's class. Superior handling, driveability combined with supreme durability makes the Mazda6 the iron-man of mid-sized cars. Come in now and test drive this beauty because at $5000 off MSRP, it won't last long.
Introduction
Practical doesn't have to be another word for boring -- the 2012 Mazda 6 is proof. This good-looking hauler is one of the more fun-loving choices in the family sedan segment, with nimble handling that adds enjoyment to mundane commutes. Add its affordable price and comfortable cabin to the mix and you get a car that covers all the bases.
With the 6, it's clear that importance was placed on creating an involving driving experience. It offers one of the best driving positions in the segment, with relatively high seat placement that gives you an expansive view of the road. Handling is keener than that of most others in this class, and the buttoned-down chassis results in a ride quality that feels more European than Japanese. Other pluses include a spacious interior and a large trunk.
The Mazda 6 does have a few minor shortcomings, the most notable being middling fuel economy and the cabin's occasionally cheap plastics. At the same time, there are some newer family sedans that might hold more appeal. The smooth-riding Hyundai Sonata is worth a look, as is the undeniably handsome Kia Optima -- both come chock-full of unexpected standard features and are more affordable than the 6. The Volkswagen Passat offers European refinement, and the sporty Nissan Altima, spacious Honda Accord and engaging Ford Fusion are also fine choices. Despite these talented rivals, the 2012 Mazda 6 is still a very worthy pick, especially for those who love to drive.
Body Styles, Trim Levels, and Options
The 2012 Mazda 6 is available in six trim levels: i Sport, i Touring, i Touring Plus, i Grand Touring, s Touring Plus and s Grand Touring. Models with the "i" prefix come with the four-cylinder engine, while models with the "s" prefix come with the V6.
The i Sport comes standard with 16-inch steel wheels, a manually height-adjustable driver seat, full power accessories, keyless entry, air-conditioning, cruise control, steering-wheel-mounted audio controls, a tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel and a six-speaker CD/MP3 stereo system with an auxiliary audio jack.
The i Touring model adds 17-inch alloy wheels, foglights, a trip computer, a power driver seat, an in-dash six-CD changer, Bluetooth phone and audio connectivity, upgraded interior trim and a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob.
Opting for the i Touring Plus will get you a sunroof, a blind-spot monitoring system, electroluminescent instrument gauges and outside mirrors with integrated turn signals. The i Grand Touring model adds leather upholstery, heated front seats, dual-zone automatic climate control, a rearview camera, a multi-information display and a 10-speaker Bose sound system. The s Touring Plus model is outfitted identically to the i Touring Plus, except for the engine, transmission and some exterior trim. The s Grand Touring adds 18-inch cast-aluminum wheels.
We expect one of the more popular options will be the Technology package, which is available for Grand Touring models. It includes automatic xenon headlights, automatic wipers, heated outside mirrors, keyless ignition/entry, auto-dimming rearview and driver-side mirrors, satellite radio, driver memory settings and a power passenger seat. A voice-activated navigation system is available only for Grand Touring models and comes with a 7-inch touchscreen display and real-time traffic. Stand-alone options vary in availability with trim levels and include many of the above-listed features as well as a rear spoiler, a chrome fuel-filler door and remote engine start.
Powertrains and Performance
The 2012 Mazda 6 i versions are powered by a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine that produces 170 horsepower and 167 pound-feet of torque. A six-speed manual transmission is standard on the i Sport. A five-speed automatic with manual shift control is offered on the i Sport and is the only choice available on i Touring, i Touring Plus and i Grand Touring models.
Mazda 6 s models are powered by a 3.7-liter V6 that produces 272 hp and 269 lb-ft of torque and are available only with a six-speed automatic. In Edmunds testing, a V6 model reached 60 mph from a standstill in 6.5 seconds, which is quick for its class. The four-cylinder automatic required 9.1 seconds, an average time for a four-cylinder family sedan.
The EPA estimates fuel economy at 21 mpg city/30 mpg highway and 24 mpg in combined driving for the four-cylinder i Sport with the five-speed manual. The Mazda 6 i models with the automatic are rated at 22/31/25 mpg and the V6-powered versions stand at 18/27/21 mpg, both of which are at the low end for this segment.
Safety
Standard safety features for all 2012 Mazda 6 models include antilock disc brakes, stability and traction control, front-seat side airbags and full-length side curtain airbags. In Edmunds brake testing, both the i and s Grand Touring models came to a stop from 60 mph in a slightly longer than average 125 feet.
In government crash tests, the Mazda 6 received four out of five stars for overall crash protection, with three stars for frontal-impact protection (four stars driver, three stars front passenger) and four stars for side-impact protection. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety gave the Mazda 6 its highest score of "Good" for frontal-offset and side impacts, while roof strength tests yielded a second-best "Acceptable" rating.
Interior Design and Special Features
The aesthetic within the 2012 Mazda 6's cabin is thoroughly modern, with lots of curves and sweeping lines, and the car's red electroluminescent gauges are a handsome addition. The center stack forms a graceful arch; it looks great, but some of its controls are less intuitive than those seen in competing models. There's ample headroom and legroom all around, and the backseats are especially spacious, comfortably accommodating even the most long-limbed passengers. If you've got a narrow build, though, you might find the wide front seats lacking in lateral support.
Though the cabin design is attractive, the 6's interior is marred by the presence of some low-grade plastics, and more expensive trim levels come with odd black-and-silver accents that may be a turn-off for some. It's also worth noting that the sound system's performance trails that of others in this class; even the upgraded Bose system could disappoint some listeners. On the plus side, the Mazda 6's 16.6-cubic-foot trunk is one of the biggest in its class, while the trunk's unobtrusive hinge mechanisms and the 60/40-split-folding rear seats further enhance cargo-hauling capabilities.
Driving Impressions
The 2012 Mazda 6 stands apart from most other family sedans on the strength of its nimble handling. It enters curves more confidently than the Honda Accord, and ranks almost as highly on the fun-to-drive meter as the class-leading Nissan Altima. Its athletic demeanor comes with a ride quality that can be a bit taut, however, and road noise is also more prominent. Still, neither is particularly bothersome, even when riding on the big 18-inch wheels.
Most drivers will find the base 2.5-liter four-cylinder to be a suitable match, but those who want gutsier performance will find that the higher Mazda 6 s trim levels offer a significant increase in power as well as improved handling with wider tires. Unfortunately, this added performance is tempered by a transmission that is slow to react in both automatic and manual modes.

The Loyal Mazda Man- Jeff P.
Jeff Parks of Lake Elisnore fell in love with the Mazda brand in 1990 and since then has owned 12 different Mazdas. He recently came in to Temecula Mazda with a beautiful mint condition 1988 Mazda RX-7 convertible for service. After the visit he had some very kind words to say about our dealership.
Here are a few photos of the RX-7
Kristina Duvall has to be the best, most conscientous, and courteous service writer at all of the Mazda dealerships I have done business with over the years. That is saying a lot since I have owned 12 different Mazdas since I have fell in love with the brand in 1990. The other day I dropped off my very low miles/mint 1988 RX-7 Convertible (I Ahave owned 2 other RX-7s), for a minor service. As always I was greated with a smile where Kristina listened to my concerns, and helped me solve my problem in a quick and expedited manner. A key thing to note is: If there is ANY change to my service issue, Kristina calls me right away explaining the issue, the cost, and is always willing to go the extra mile in order to make my service experience a pleasent one at John Hine Temecula Mazda. This is very comforting as I never show up at the service department with a bill that surprises me, and my car is always out waiting for me upon my arrival at the dealership. Although this is truly a team effort with all of those at John Hine Temecula Mazda to deliver my car serviced time, there is no doubt in my mind that Kristina is the driving force behind that effort. For that I truly must thank Kristina for her undying commitment to my Mazdas which to me are my "zoom zoom" babies. Sincerely, J. Parks--Lake Elsinore, California
