Mazda to be First Japanese Automaker to Sell Diesel in US!

Losangeles20122014mazda6-620x350

Once known for its rotary engines, Mazda will become the first Japanese automaker to market a diesel model in the United States with its new Mazda6.

Mazda is focusing on cleaner diesel engines, 13 years after Tokyo’s governor had banned many of them from the city. As consumers continue to look for alternative powerplants to help save on rising fuel prices, diesel engines have become a viable alternative to hybrids and electric vehicles.

In addition, improved technology on filters, turbos, and fuel injection have helped diesel engines become quieter and cleaner than they were 13 years ago. According to Mazda, 80 percent of its orders on the CX-5 SUV and Mazda6 sedan in Japan this year have been for the diesel model, despite costing almost 20 percent more than the gasoline counterpart.

Car Maintenance Tips!

Illust_driving_clipboard

  • Use the grade of motor oil recommended by your car's manufacturer. Using a different motor oil can lower your gasoline mileage by 1% to 2%.

  • Keep tires properly inflated and aligned to improve your gasoline mileage by around 3.3%.

  • Get regular engine tune-ups and car maintenance checks to avoid fuel economy problems due to worn spark plugs, dragging brakes, low transmission fluid, or transmission problems.

  • Replace clogged air filters to improve gas mileage by as much as 10% and protect your engine.

  • Combine errands into one trip. Several short trips, each one taken from a cold start, can use twice as much fuel as one trip covering the same distance when the engine is warm.

Mazda has right mix to chase 120,000 more US sales

Mazdamx5faceliftgal-620x350

Mazda MX-5 Miata was named to Car and Driver magazine's Ten Best list for the eighth year in a row and for the fourteenth time overall.

The CX-5 tops or comes in as runner-up on every compact crossovers poll.

The Mazda3 is a perennial favorite among auto critics. That's three clear, unquestioned winners in the Mazda showroom.

Given the perennial admiration of the Mazda3, Miata and now CX-5 by the auto press, Mazda is likely going to get the 120,000 additional sales Mazda North American Operations President, Jim O'Sullivan and Japan are looking for.

Watch Out for the Other Guy

Roadtrip

Sometimes, it doesn't matter how safely you drive. You could be driving the speed limit and obeying all traffic rules and someone else can crash into you. One good rule of thumb to use is, "Assume everyone else on the road is an idiot." In other words, be prepared for unpredictable lane changes, sudden stops, unsignaled turns, swerving, tailgating and every other bad driving behavior imaginable. Chances are, you'll eventually encounter someone like this -- and it pays to be ready when you do.

It's impossible to list all the possible things another driver might do, but there are a few common examples. If you're pulling out of a driveway into traffic and an oncoming car has its turn signal on, don't assume it's actually turning. You might pull out only to find that turn signal has been blinking since 1987. If you're approaching an intersection where you have the right of way, and another approaching car has the stop sign, don't assume it will actually stop. As you approach, take your foot off the gas and be prepared to brake.

Of course, being prepared requires awareness, so make sure you check your mirrors and keep an eye on side streets so you'll know which other cars are around you and how they're driving. Don't focus only on the road in front of your car -- look ahead so you can see what's happening 50 to 100 yards (46 to 91 meters) up the road.

PATRICK GALLAGHER WINS MAZDA SHOOTOUT!

La13973
Patrick Gallagher had an impressive racing resume last week.  Now he can add 2012 Mazda Club Racer Shootout winner to his list of accomplishments.  Gallagher will follow in the footsteps of Andrew Caddell, Brad Rampelberg, Justin Piscitell, Nick Evans, Scott Shelton, and Elliott Skeer, the six previous Mazda shootout winners.

He also joins the MAZDASPEED Motorsports Development Driver ladder, which includes the Mazda Road to Indy, program class of 2013.  The MAZDASPEED ladder has been a critical part of the success of up-and-coming racers including Raphael Matos, John Edwards, Conor Daly, Joel Miller, Matthew Brabham, Connor De Phillippi, Dane Cameron, Jack Hawksworth, Stevan McAleer, Jason Saini, Todd Lamb, Eric Foss, Michael Cooper, Trent Hindman, Danilo Estrella, Adam Christodoulou, Sage Karam, Spencer Pigot, Felix Serralles, Tristan Vautier, Petri Suvanto, Scott Anderson, and Yago Cesario

When told that he had won the shootout, a prize valued at $75,000, the richest in all of club racing Gallagher was almost speechless, " I don't quite know what to say, It is amazing to have this opportunity. A huge thanks to everyone who helped me get to this point, Mazda, my parents, Howard Concrete Pumping, JAY Motorsports, CTL Engineering, and HKC Support.  There is a reason there are more Mazda's road raced on any given weekend than any other brand, they build the best cars in the world and I am honored to have the opportunity to be a part of their family."

The four shootout finalists were:

  • Kenton Koch, Skip Barber Racing School MAZDASPEED Challenge Summer Series Champion
  • Patrick Gallagher, SCCA Formula Enterprises Champion
  • Bruce McNutt, Nova Scotia Spec Miata Champion
  • Yiannis Tsiounis, NASA Spec Miata Champion

Charles Espenlaub, who has participated in the selection process in all six previous competitions, commented on the deliberation process; "I am absolutely amazed with the incredible level of talent at the Mazda Club Racer Shootout.  This competition this year was the closest ever. The judging process was extremely difficult and made for a virtual photo finish at the end. Congratulations to the competitors, a lot was learned, new friendships formed and the Mazda family gets a little bigger. Good luck to next year's Mazda Club Racing Champions, but a word of advice...You better bring your A-game to this competition, only the best will do!"

The criteria: Given that each of the finalists had proven themselves on the track by winning a championship, the criteria to move up needed to be more encompassing.   To succeed on the professional level requires a balance of both on-track and off-track skills including the following:

  • Driving ability – fast laps
  • Driving ability – consistent laps
  • Technical feedback – Understanding of vehicle dynamics and suspension
  • Technical feedback – Ability to evaluate vehicle handling
  • Technical feedback – Ability to analyze data
  • Technical feedback – Ability to improve vehicle handling
  • The business of motorsports – Business proposal
  • The business of motorsports – Business presentation
  • The business of motorsports – PR / Social Media Skills

The driving sessions were conducted at Buttonwillow Raceway Park using a Mazda MX-5 Playboy Cup Car prepared by Tri-Point Motorsports.

The judges: Each year Mazda invites a panel of outside judges to make the selection.   The judges brought a wealth of both on-track and off-track expertise.  Over a dozen professionals were involved in the preliminary business proposal review, on-track activities, or both.  The 2012 panel consisted of:

  • Jonathan Bomarito – Professional Mazda racer, SpeedSource
  • Charles Espenlaub – Professional Mazda racer, Dempsey Racing
  • Pete Evanow – College of Communications and Business, Cal State Fullerton
  • John Fabijanic – College of Engineering, Cal Poly San Luis Obispo
  • Eric Foss – Professional Racer, MAZDASPEED ladder alum
  • Karl KoenigsteinMichelin North America
  • John Morton – Sports car racing legend
  • Mo Murray – Just Marketing, Inc.
  • Lisa Natale – Marketing Consultant, Playboy
  • Dan Passe – Passe Consulting Inc.
  • Jason Penix – Director of Grassroots Initiatives, IndyCar
  • Jeremy Shaw – Team USA Scholarship
  • Scott Shelton – Director, ABC Full Circle, MAZDASPEED ladder alum
  • Steven Cole Smith – Freelance Journalist

The tally:  After a full day of both driving, and classroom activities, the judges added the objective and subjective scores -- discussing the merits of each driver.  The judges deliberated carefully before declaring Gallagher the 2012 champion.

The prize package:  The total prize package is valued at over $75,000 and is the largest prize in club racing.

  • $50,000 for the running of his car for the season

Mazdanews

Mazda North American Operations (MNAO) today confirmed the announcement of several North American vehicle debuts at the upcoming Los Angeles Auto Show.  The all-new 2014 Mazda6 mid-size sedan, updated 2014 CX-5 compact SUV and face-lifted 2013 CX-9 mid-size SUV will make their first continental appearances.  All vehicles are scheduled to be on sale this winter.  A global debut from Mazda Motorsports as well as official timing and vehicle application for the U.S.-destined SKYACTIV-D 2.2-liter clean diesel engine also will share the stage.

"It's definitely an exciting time for the Zoom-Zoom brand," said Jim O'Sullivan, president and CEO, MNAO.  "The long-awaited, redesigned 2014 Mazda6 will naturally receive much interest but let's not take away from our strong SUV lineup in the CX-5 and CX-9, which are segment leaders in their own right.  Motorsports, an innate part of Mazda's soul, will have important news to share and last but most certainly not least SKYACTIV-D will be here.  I have no doubt that consumers will look at Mazda's upcoming lineup with wide eyes, stirred hearts and driving inspiration."

Taking nearly identical design cues from the TAKERI Concept, the 2014 Mazda6 follows in the all-new footsteps and clean-sheet-of-paper approach of CX-5 to become the second production vehicle to feature the full breadth of the KODO "Soul of Motion" design language and also fully incorporate SKYACTIV®[1] TECHNOLOGY.  Mazda6 will feature a new SKYACTIV-G 2.5-liter gasoline engine as well as new-to-market technologies in the Smart City Brake Support (SCBS) system, an automated safety feature designed to mitigate front-end collisions at low speeds, and i-ELOOP, a Mazda-developed capacitor-based brake energy regeneration system for improved fuel economy.

The 2014 CX-5 also will receive the SCBS system, which will be available as part of an upgraded Technology Package for Touring and Grand Touring models.  At this time, CX-5 will not be equipped with i-ELOOP.

Both the 2014 CX-5 and 2014 Mazda6 will go on sale in January 2013.

Available at Mazda dealerships now, the 2013 CX-9 receives a mid-cycle facelift, immediately evident in its familial KODO design enhancements to the front and rear fascia.  The three-row, seven-passenger SUV stalwart also becomes even more tech savvy with Mazda's next-generation audio and infotainment system that includes a 5.8-inch color multi-information touch screen display, updated Bluetooth® audio and phone connectivity, a TomTom technology-based in-dash navigation system, HD Radio™ Technology, Pandora® and Short Message Service (SMS) audio receipt and delivery.

Mazda Motorsports will unveil an all-new competition race car which will make its motorsports debut in January at the 2013 Rolex 24 at Daytona, the premier motorsports endurance race in the United States.  The vehicle will be equipped with a turbocharged SKYACTIV-D 2.2L, making it the first diesel-powered competitor in the 51-year history of the 24-hour race.  Upon build-completion, the diesel racing engine remained 63 percent OEM stock.  Mazda will be seeking its 24th motorsports class win.

More information on Mazda's Los Angeles Auto Show vehicle debuts as well as updates on its global business plans will be announced during a press conference on Thursday, November 29.  The presentation will begin at 9:30 AM PST and will be held at the Mazda display booth located in the Los Angeles Convention Center's South Hall.

Russell, thanks for sharing your experience with us!

"I wanted to share a few things with you before I forgot.  As always, you were friendly and attentive to me even though you were busy with a few customers on my last oil change appointment. I always feel welcome in the service department and among friends when I bring my car in; I enjoy the experience.  I also really like how Nick Benedict shares my enthusiasm for my Mazdaspeed6; it's such a fun and rare car.  I like how he treats my car like his own and I know he services it with care.

Your team has been servicing my cars, first my 04 Mazda 6 and now my 06 Speed6 for about 4 years now.  I am a big Mazda fan, and it was your service department and my experience with John Hine Mazda Temecula that convinced me to buy a brand new 2013 Mazda CX-5 from Gio (please thank him again for me).  I feel at home at John Hine Temecula and enjoy my service visits there.  Now, since I bought the CX-5 from you guys, I have twice as many reasons to come in for service appointments!

I love Mazdas and have become a huge fan, and your service department and John Hine Temecula make the experience that much better.  Please let Bill Brumbaugh know that I appreciate your hard work and am happy to have such a great Mazda dealer just miles from my house."- Russell P

Here's a sneak preview to the 2013 Mazda CX-9!

Cx9
On Sunday in the Touchdown City area at CenturyLink Field Event Center, Mazda brought in a 2013 CX-9 fresh off the transcontinental delivery boat for a local media preview. Tetsu Nakazawa, from the Product Strategy and Development division of Mazda North American Operations, gave us an overview of what's new about the company's three-row, seven-passenger crossover utility vehicle.

For 2013, CX-9's model lineup is unchanged. It's available in Sport, Touring, and Grand Touring versions, and all three are offered with front-wheel or all-wheel drive.

Exterior design changes aren't significant enough to qualify as a momentous makeover, but you'll notice a whole new look for the nose and tail. Up front, the grille, fascia, headlamps, bumper and fog lamps are redesigned to reflect the “KODO Soul of Motion” design language Mazda adopted in 2010. At the rear, taillamps and bumper are changed, and the tailpipe is now round. For the wheels, the 20-inchers have been given a premium plating.

On the inside, white illumination replaces red on the gauges, perforation has been added to leather seats, the automatic transmission shift knob is updated, and there's Bluetooth audio, 5.8-inch LCD multi-information display, USB audio input and HD radio.

Touring and Grand Touring versions receive rear backup sensors, a rearview camera and a blind spot monitoring system. In addition to that, the Grand Touring now has bi-xenon headlamps (replacing the previous year's xenon lamps), memory for the door mirrors, and a door mirror tilt-in-reverse feature that aims the mirrors at the ground alongside the vehicle when the driver is backing up. Tilt-in-reverse is driver-selectable, so if you'd rather keep the mirrors in their normal position while backing up, you can.

The CX-9's standard powertrain, a 3.7-liter V6 paired with a six-speed automatic transmission, is carried over from the previous model year. It generates 273 horsepower and 270 lb-ft of torque, and has an EPA fuel economy rating of 16 mpg city and 22 mpg highway.

Read this article on what Mazda is doing to help those affected by Hurricane Sandy.

Mazda-logo

Mazda North American Operations (MNAO) today announced a $100,000 contribution to the American Red Cross to support relief efforts for victims of Hurricane Sandy. Additionally, The Mazda Foundation (USA), Inc., Board of Trustees approved grants to the Flemington Area Food Pantry and The Food Bank Network of Somerset County for $5,000 each. These two area food banks serve the communities immediately surrounding Mazda's Northeast Region Office, an area devastated by Hurricane Sandy.

"Hurricane Sandy has had a devastating impact on many people in the Northeast, including our own employees, dealers and customers, so we're pleased to work with the American Red Cross and local food banks to help those who have been affected by the disaster," said Jim O'Sullivan, president and CEO, MNAO.

In addition, Mazda Capital Services (MCS)1 has informed MNAO that it will assist current customers in the areas impacted by Hurricane Sandy by automatically waiving late fees on MCS auto loans and leases. This will give MCS customers until the end of business on Monday, Nov. 5 to make a payment to bring their accounts current and avoid fees. MCS customers who believe they are in an area that has been impacted by Hurricane Sandy and who are having trouble making a car payment, want to confirm eligibility for the late fee waiver, or have any questions, can call Mazda Capital Services at 1-866-984-7718 (loan customers) or 1-866-984-7716 (lease customers).

For everyone in the high impact areas who have an insurance claim of damage or loss to their current vehicle, MNAO is offering $500 cash towards the purchase of a new Mazda. In addition, qualified customers have the option to defer their first payment for 90 days from the contract date on the purchase of any new Mazda financed under special financing offered by participating lenders.

Here's the latest Mazda news straight form the SEMA in Las Vegas!

Mazda_mx5_light_068_previewlo
The first Mazda to fully incorporate SKYACTIV®1 TECHNOLOGY, the brand's engineering philosophy that strength, safety and performance can still equate to fuel efficiency, the 2013 CX-5 was built completely new, from sketch book to sheet metal.  With Mazda North American Operations' (MNAO) Irvine-based Design team behind the helm, the same treatment was given to the CX-5 models which make their global debut this week at the 2012 Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA) Show.

"The CX-5 is all Mazda – from its KODO design language to its inspired driving ability – and was the perfect 'clean slate' vehicle from which our Southern California team could create the concept vehicles you see here today," said Derek Jenkins, director, MNAO Design.

CX-5 180
Southern California has a way of being everything for everyone with its rare ability in acting like a four-season play palace – all in the same day.  From the ocean sand to the sandy desert, from the high altitudes to the low lands, this Western region is an adventurer's paradise.  Here enters the CX-5 180.  Can't decide what to do with your "lazy" Sunday?  Do it all.  Really.  This CX-5 won't mind.  Designed to go with the flow, whether your plans be set in stone or a last-minute "Why not," the CX-5 180 is up for any task.

Outfitted with Burton Cheetah snowboards for surfing the slopes and a Rusty surfboard for shredding the surf, the CX-5 180 features a stylized topographical map of SoCal locales Big Bear Lake and Point Dume.  Seasonal statistics for the snow and surf hot spots are featured on the front doors to include temperature highs and lows, snowfall and surf rise as well as the all-important digits of GPS coordinates.  Big Bear Lake's snowy summit is featured along the left side of the vehicle with equipment-appropriate snowboards up top while Point Dume's depth details sprawl along the right-hand side with the painted-to-match surfboard topping the chart.

Highlighted by custom-crafted colors, the mapping components featured on the CX-5 180 include dark hues of Midnight and Denim to reflect depth while lighter shades of Tidal Blue and Bay Blue signify height.  Dashes of Luminous Red are used across the entire vehicle to indicate roads.  Rough or paved, the all-wheel-drive system of the CX-5 180 allows it to maneuver wherever the trail may lead.  The same red makes its way onto select spokes of the Mazda Design custom-built 20-inch black chrome alloy wheels, which are wrapped in all-season Goodyear Eagle® F1 Asymmetric 265/40R20-sized tires for added stability and style.  A custom matte red finish replaces the stock chrome of the vehicle's five-point grille and continues into the headlamps for added aggressiveness.  A satin chrome dual exhaust by Racing Beat adds a finishing touch.

The functional mobility of the CX-5 180's exterior translates perfectly into the comforts of its interior.  Exterior-complementing Aqua interior leather is fitted onto the front and rear seats, the steering wheel, door panels, armrests and the brake boot.  Contrasting Bright White leather inserts appear on the door panels, steering wheel and seats.  French seam accents in red and white stitching appear on armrests and seats, with the red reflecting the exterior's accents representing roads and trails.  A customized trapezoidal stitching pattern is detailed on the steering wheel, which is marked by a subtle white leather strip at the high-noon position.  A custom-painted decoration panel in the topography theme of the exterior adds the final touch to the ebb and flow of the CX-5 180, creating a 360-degree perspective of the vehicle's flexibility, regardless of how contradictory the day's activities could be.

CX-5 Urban
With a quick glimpse, the CX-5 Urban appears to be merely shrouded in a matte finish.  First impressions have never been more deceiving.  Heavily influenced by design, the vision for the CX-5 Urban was inspired by styles found in fashion and architecture.  With a Mazda Design-developed custom paint process, the dark surface of the CX-5 Urban features multi-dimensional shadows with each triangular-like design shaped to reflect each bend and twist of the vehicle's sheet metal.  Utilizing the KODO "Soul of Motion" design language of the production model, the Mazda Design team translated this initial blueprint into seemingly flat, black surfaces that evoke depth at just the slight hint of light.

The attention to detail is nothing short of stellar as no two shades of Black Mica touch.  For added refinement without deviating from the stealth-like quality of the CX-5 Urban's dark night appearance, Ore facets appear as thin pinstripes on matte paint surfaces, as an accent outlining the matte black wheels, as a precision feature in the headlamps and as a change of shade to the five-point front grille.

To further sculpt the aggressive nature of the CX-5 Urban are customized wheel flare extensions which perfectly envelop the well-matched pairing of muscular 22-inch Ace Alloy Scorpio matte black wheels and sticky Nitto Tire NT420s 295/30R20 all-season tires.  The CX-5 Urban also features a Racing Beat dual exhaust.

CX-5 Dempsey
The CX-5 Dempsey not only features actor and race car driver Patrick Dempsey's name but it was developed with his competitive passions in mind – motorsports and cycling, to be more specific.  Throughout his professional racing career, Dempsey and Mazda Motorsports have been familiar friends with Dempsey seeing seat time behind the wheel of an RX-8 in the GRAND-AM Rolex Series.  Sleek, sporty and stylishly dressed to take care of business, the CX-5 Dempsey features a high-contrast custom paint scheme of glossy grays and matte blacks with bright red highlights.  Outfitted with a Specialized Bicycle S-Works Tarmac road bike and a Thule Atlantis rooftop cargo box, no road is unexplorable, whether it be a mountain trail or Manhattan traffic.  Under the hood lurks a European-specification SKYACTIV-D 2.2-liter clean diesel engine to power the all-wheel-drive system, meaning no road is a challenge either.

The high-power clean diesel offers a low 14:1 compression ratio with an output of 129 kW at 4,500 rpm and 420 nM of torque at 2,000 rpm.  Mated to a SKYACTIV-MT six-speed manual transmission, the CX-5 Dempsey offers racing-inspired dynamics and down-right driving fun – two things usually lacking in the compact SUV segment.  The vehicle sits on Mazda Design-customized 20-inch black chrome alloy wheels encased in Michelin Latitude® Sport 255/45ZR20-sized all-season tires.  Each wheel is highlighted with a single double-spoke painted in glossy Luminous Red, a color used in a limited fashion yet makes an appealing visual impact to the CX-5 Dempsey.  Satin chrome touches in the Racing Beat dual exhaust complete the athletic ensemble.

The exterior color scheme was developed in coordination with the high-performance, competitive architecture of the Specialized Bicycle road racer.  Secured to the rear of the vehicle via a Mazda factory hitch and Thule T2 carrier, the S-Works Tarmac SL4 Red features a Carbon Satin carbon fiber frame with Red Keyline highlights.  To match, the CX-5 Dempsey is receives a glossy Anatomy Gray paint base with thick strips of striking Brilliant Black.  Luminous Red graphic lines separate the dark layers as Bright White borders and "CX-5" decals emblazon expansive surfaces such as the doors, hood and cargo box.  A Black Mica matte finish details the entire tailgate and continues across the lower portion of the vehicle as well as along the roofline to complete the bicycle's Carbon Satin look into the front hood.  The design theme evokes a rugged functionality and tempered finesse.

The composed aggression is maintained throughout the interior as well.  Black perforated leather inserts are nestled within gray aniline leather bolsters featuring red accents which correlate directly with exterior graphics.  All leather wrapped, the steering wheel, shifter boot, armrests, door panels, center storage bin as well as front and rear seats feature contrasting Luminous Red stitching.  The full-length decorative panel is custom painted in glossy Brilliant Black and features a single Luminous Red outline with a Bright White vehicle model imprint.  The CX-5 Dempsey conveys the ambition and awareness that beats within the heart of any competitor, regardless of the race route.

MX-5 Super25
The MX-5 Super25 dives deeper into the spirit of Mazda's motorsports DNA and goes beyond the short-track prowess of the Super20, the previous MX-5 concept vehicle built for SEMA.  Unlike its predecessor – which was loud, proud and boisterous with its bursts of turbocharged energy – the Super25 was crafted with endurance racing in mind.

Known for its commanding number of grassroots motorsports racers, the MX-5 Miata is the epitome of a light and limber sports car that won't burn a hole through an enthusiast's pocket.  With such a dependable starting point from which to build, the MX-5 was an optimal choice for creating a concept with the ability to handle such long-distance, weary-heavy racing.  Outfitted with a multitude of racing-inspired exterior features coupled with Mazda Design-created interior touches, the Super25 is labeled with the quick-to-motivate "55" racing number.  A significant figure in the history of Mazda Motorsports, the distinction is a tribute to the brand's historic 1991 24 Hours of Le Mans win that made Mazda the first (and still the only) Japanese manufacturer to ever be named champion.

The Super25 features the bold yet refined core colors of MAZDASPEED Motorsports Development – black, gray and red.  Covered in a commanding Super Red gloss, Brilliant White appears as minimal character details along the hood with a matte Black Mica finish dressing the lower portions of the vehicle from the front and rear fascia as well as along the side skirts.  The black, red and white pattern continues onto the glossy black surface of the sports car's fixed hard top with Brilliant White stripes remaining extending through onto the trunk lid.  A customized four-lamp lighting pod is embedded just above the modified grille and is equipped with bright-for-the-night (and day) PIAA 40 Series halogens on the inside flanked by 510 Super White Driving halogens on the outside.  Super25 looks handsomely poised on 17-inch Volk Racing T37 six-spoke matte black wheels suited in BFGoodrich g-Force™ R1™ 225-45ZR17 tires.

A Sparco Evo competition racing seat provides the lone sitting area within the Super25.  The driver's cockpit is further customized with Mazda Design-developed Charcoal ultra-suede material featuring Tomato Red perforated inserts.  The suede Sparco R323 competition steering wheel allows for even more control and precision within the driver's hands.  The six-point racing harness by Sparco ensures the driver is snug as well as comfortable during competitions while an AiM MXL data acquisition logger custom-fitted into the dash offers real-time ECU figures.

Since it's always sunny in California we decided to share this great tip!

Mazda

Park in the shade

Of course, a garage is always the ideal place to park your car. But if one isn’t available, minimize interior damage from UV sunlight and heat by always trying to park your car in the shade. If no shade is available or if you find parking under a tree results in bird droppings, use a car shade to minimize the sun’s impact. As a bonus, you’ll have a cooler car to step into on hot sunny days. Car shades come in two basic types: those that you unfold and place on the front windshield and rear window, or pleated types that attach to the windshield posts (with adhesive), window frames (with Velcro), or the windows themselves (with suction cups).

Additionally, $50,000.00 will be awarded to organizations selected by each of the five regional offices of MNAO.

"We're proud that the Foundation is able to give back to the many communities in which we work and live," said Jim O'Sullivan, president and CEO of MNAO and chairman of the Mazda Foundation (USA), Inc. "Mazda and its employees are active participants in their communities and by supporting these outstanding organizations we are helping build a better and brighter future for many under privileged and challenged individuals."

The Operation Rebound Program of the Challenged Athletes Foundation program assists injured military personnel in pursuing active lifestyles of physical fitness and competitive athletics. Operation Rebound provides adaptive equipment, coaching, training and competition expenses to troops sustaining injuries in Iraq and Afghanistan and to first responders, helping them pursue an active lifestyle despite their injuries.

The Clemson University International Center for Automotive Research (CU-ICAR) is a state-of-the-art education program in the Southeast that focuses on automotive research and other transportation and advanced manufacturing issues. As part of the partnership, the Mazda Foundation supports the CU-ICAR / Mazda Annual Graduate Fellowship Program, from which three fellowships are provided to graduate students majoring in automotive engineering at the university. The fellowships are performance-based and renewable for up to three years.

Dillard University, a private, liberal arts, Historically Black College or University, located in the heart of New Orleans, Louisiana, has partnered with the Mazda Foundation since 1998 to fund the Mazda Scholars Program which provides scholarships to students who are majoring in Business and International Business.

In light of Mazda's operations near Detroit and the area's high unemployment rate, the Mazda Foundation has partnered with Gleaners Community Food Bank since 2010. The Mazda Foundation grant supports Gleaners School-based Mobile Pantry Program. This program is an emergency food pantry on wheels; a trailer filled with food for school children and their families, which arrives at the school. Each family receives 50 pounds of food, including fresh produce, grains and high protein items.

The Hispanic Scholarship Fund and the Mazda Foundation award tuition scholarships to Latino students attending the University of California at Irvine and California State University at Fullerton as well as four local community colleges. Mazda has provided college scholarships to over 188 Latino college students and has provided over $670,000 in support to HSF.

Located in Mission Viejo, California, the Mission Hospital provides patients with high quality, accessible and affordable medical and surgical care along a continuum, as well as wellness and health promotion programs for the entire community.  Contributions from the Mazda Foundation will be used to fund the addition of two new operating rooms to meet the surgical demand at the hospital.

The Project Access After-School Tutoring and Enrichment Program in Orange County targets school-age youth by providing after-school tutoring / homework help, computer and Internet instruction / access, educational games, reading groups as well as productive enrichment activities, e.g. arts and crafts, physical activities, healthy snacks, character education, teen activities, service projects and field trips. Contributions from Mazda go toward after-school homework help supplies, youth enrichment activities, field trip expenses, and upgrades of the computer labs.

Second Harvest Food Bank of Orange County, CA, collects food and distributes it to more than 385 local member charities. These non-profit agencies include senior centers, rehabilitation centers, shelters, church pantries, homes for abused children and many other emergency assistance organizations. The Mazda Foundation's funding specifically helps initiatives designed to alleviate hunger and malnutrition among the elderly, a program designed to curb the effects of malnutrition experienced by children living in poverty, and a holiday project created to provide traditional holiday meals for those who would otherwise go without.

Shoes That Fit, operating out of Claremont, CA, helps build the self-esteem of schoolchildren in need by providing them with new shoes and clothing so that they can attend school in comfort and with dignity. In Southern California where Mazda's headquarters is located, more than 103,000 schoolchildren in need received new shoes and clothing.

In order to demonstrate the Mazda Foundation's commitment to environmental preservation, a partnership was forged with the Student Conservation Association in 1998 to create the Mazda "Save Our American Resources" (SOAR) program. Through SOAR, Mazda sponsors a natural or cultural resource assistant at a national park, forest or monument in each of the 50 states. Resource assistants provide services ranging from trail maintenance and protection of endangered species to guided historical monument tours.

For 28 years, Mazda has been promoting cross-cultural relations between the U.S. and Japan through its contributions to Youth For Understanding. In 2013, Mazda scholarship funding will provide an opportunity for six high-school aged students to spend six-weeks in Japan during the summer. Each year, approximately half of the scholarships are given to children of MNAO employees or Mazda dealer employees. The remaining scholarships are awarded based on a nationwide competition open to all high school students. Students live for six weeks with a Japanese host family, learn to speak and write Japanese, and immerse themselves in daily life.

Don’t forget the timing belt
On many cars, it’s the belt you can’t see that is the most critical. If your manual says, as many do, that you should replace the timing belt at 50,000 miiles, do it! A failed timing belt can, depending on engine type, cause thousands of dollars worth of damage to your engine.

Read this article on how Mazda Motorsports has partnered with Project Yellow Light to bring attention to the distracted driving problem.

Pyl_logoa2

Social media is more addicting than alcohol and cigarettes, according to Discovery News. AAA Foundation says it is this addiction, along with other non-cell phone related distractions, which drive up to 8,000 car accidents each and every day. In 2009, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reported 5,474 people were killed in distracted driving related accidents in addition to 448,000 injuries attributed to the same cause. Julie Garner and her family know all too well about the dangers of distracted driving. It is for this reason that she and her family created Project Yellow Light. With Teen Safety Week being October 14-20, this is an ideal time to reach teenagers as they begin the school year.

Dedicated to the education of those most commonly affected, Project Yellow Light strives to show teens and young adults the importance of staying focused on the road ahead. Garner was directly affected by a distracted driving accident when her son, Hunter, was killed in a car accident in 2007. Since the accident, it has been her family's pledge to educate teens and young adults on the dangers of driving while distracted.

"The premise behind Project Yellow Light is to give teens a big voice in reducing the number of car crashes – because they have a unique voice and the ability to get through to their friends, their peers, in a way adults cannot," said Julie Garner, Project Yellow Light co-founder. "Teens will listen to their friends more readily than they will listen to an authoritative figure talking down to them."

Every year, Project Yellow Light challenges teens to create 60-second public service announcement videos surrounding the subject of distracted driving. This year, the topic is, "One Text or Call Could Wreck It All," as provided by distraction.gov. Previously, the scholarships have only been available to high-school students; however, the recent partnership with Mazda has allowed Project Yellow Light to expand their reach to include college students.

"The topic of distracted driving is so important to all of us. As parents, family and friends, it is important that we all look out for each other on the road," said John Doonan, director of Mazda Motorsports, Mazda North American Operations. "Through motorsports representation, we hope to reach a far greater audience and show the public the importance of on-road safety."

Mazda Motorsports has partnered with Project Yellow Light to help bring exposure to the challenge of distracted driving, because their young racers, such as Zach Veach, can have a great impact with teens because they are teens themselves. When Zach was just 15 he developed an Android phone app that automatically responds to text messages while the owner is driving. There are many other young drivers like Veach on the Mazda Road to Indy driver-development ladder who work hard to support the distracted driving campaign in order to greatly reduce the number of accidents and deaths each year.

Read this great article on why the 2012 Mazda3 ranks top car of 2012.

Mazda3

The 2012 Mazda3 today was named to the "10 Best Back-to-School Cars of 2012" list by Kelley Blue Book's www.kbb.com, the leading provider of new and used vehicle information.  Mazda3 also is listed by KBB.com as one of the "10 Best Sedans Under $25,000" and one of the "10 Coolest Cars Under $18,000 of 2012."

According to the editors of Kelley Blue Book's KBB.com, Mazda3 earned a top ten spot because "available in sedan and hatchback forms, even the most affordable four-door version of this well-finished compact comes with a respectable measure of Mazda's Zoom-Zoom character, impressive safety features and a utility-enhancing 60/40-split-folding rear seat."

"A global winner for Mazda, the Mazda3 continues to find itself on Top 10 lists with its attractive combination of style, safety and value," said Jim O'Sullivan, president and CEO, Mazda North American Operations (MNAO).  "Also, thanks to its SKYACTIV®[1] TECHNOLOGY components, Mazda3 offers one of the highest EPA-rated fuel economy ratings in the compact car segment."

The 2012 Mazda3 starts at $15,200[2] MSRP and is available with four powertrains on either four- or five-door styles.  Models equipped with SKYACTIV TECHNOLOGY boast a segment competitive 40 highway miles per gallon (MPG) on the sedan and a class-leading 39 highway MPG on the hatchback, both when equipped with the SKYACTIV-Drive six-speed automatic transmission.  All 2012 Mazda3 and MAZDASPEED3 models are equipped with a high level of standard safety features and are recognized as a "Top Safety Pick" by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).

Vehicles were chosen based on several factors including being available for $16,000 or less according to Kelley Blue Book's Fair Purchase Price, which is calculated as the average price paid by others in a shopper's area based on actual transaction data updated each week.

Give It a Rest
Shift into neutral at traffic lights. The transmission doesn't care, and it makes life a bit easier for the engine. This technique reduces the amount of heat carried by the cooling system and can increase gas mileage a tick or two.

Here's a rumoured preview of what's to come for the Mazda3 in 2014

Mazda3
According to Car and Driver, the next-generation Mazda3 is set to undergo an extensive overhaul, similar to what the Japanese automaker has done with its larger Mazda6 sedan.

On the powertrain front, expect the still-new 155-horsepower 2.0-liter Skyactiv four-cylinder to carry over. But since the next Mazda3 will likely shed hundreds of pounds thanks to the company's lighter Skyactiv-tuned platform (a good chunk of which will be shared with the CX-5), the 2.0-liter engine should return improved fuel economy and performance since there won't be so much heft to cart around. Currently, the 2.0-liter Mazda3 returns up to 40 miles per gallon on the highway.

C/D also states that a diesel-powered version of the compact Mazda3 is under consideration, as is a new version of the turbocharged Mazdaspeed3.

Visually, expect the new Mazda3 to receive the full brunt of the automaker's new Kodo styling language. That isn't a bad thing, though – both the new CX-5 and Mazda6 are handsome vehicles, and we think the aggressive headlamps and upright grille will translate nicely to the smaller package. C/D has worked up a rendering of what the Mazda3 could look like in hatchback form with the new styling direction, so head over there to check it out.

Problems with your water fluid tank? Click here for the solution!

Washerfluid

Fix the washer fluid tank

Cracked washer-deicer fluid tanks are fairly common once a car is of a certain age. A good remedy — until you can buy a new tank or find one at the junkyard — is to insert a plastic freezer bag into the tank and fill it with the washer fluid.

Mazda using wind turbine Electric Double Layer Capacitors to improve fuel efficiency.

Mazdaeloop

Mazda is working on a new braking system called i-ELOOP. It captures energy from the vehicle's inertia and produces an electric charge from the alternator just as the driver lets off the gas pedal. This energy is captured quickly in a Electric Double Layer Capacitor, which are commonly found in wind turbines. The system will debut on the 2014 Mazda6 and is part of the company's Skyactiv fuel-economy boosting efforts.

Under the most optimal conditions (i.e., when running every imaginable battery-draining component in the car), Mazda's new system can boost fuel economy by as much as 10 percent. More typically, though, fuel economy will increase by about one mile per gallon.

In 2011, the Japanese automaker said it was aiming to boost fleetwide fuel economy by about 30 percent over the next three years through its Skyactiv program. That effort starts down the fuel-saving path by using improvements in engine design, aerodynamics and weight-reducing parts. Later, bigger changes to the powertrain (i.e., plugs) go into effect.

2013 Mazda CX-9 World Premiere at Australian International Motor Show

Mazda

Mazda Motor Corporation will hold the world premiere of the refreshed Mazda CX-9 crossover SUV at the 2012 Australian International Motor Show.

Held in Sydney, the 2012 Australian International Motor Show begins October 18 and runs through to October 28, 2012. The 2013 CX-9 will be launched in Australia later this year.

Mazda CX-9 is a crossover sport-utility SUV featuring a distinctive sporty appearance, a high-quality cabin, the flexibility of three-rows, and Mazda's exciting "Zoom-Zoom" driving dynamics. The current CX-9 has sold over 210,000 units* in 74 countries, including North America and Australia, as Mazda's range-topping SUV.

The 2013 Mazda CX-9 carries over the utility and dynamic driving performance of the current model while adopting Mazda's "KODO - Soul of Motion" design theme at the front and rear for even sportier styling and stronger presence. Enhancements in craftsmanship and interior design further the feeling of quality and refinement. With regard to equipment, the infotainment system features the latest audio, navigation and speech-recognition systems based on the Human Machine Interface (HMI) which is intuitive to use. In addition, advanced active-safety features, such as Forward Obstruction Warning System, Lane Departure Warning System, and High Beam Control System, help drivers recognize and avoid danger.

As with the current model, the 2013 CX-9 features the MZI 3.7-liter V6 engine and a six-speed automatic transmission for powerful and refined driving pleasure.

The all-new Mazda6 (known as Atenza in Japan) will also make its Australian premiere in Sydney. It is the second of Mazda's new generation of products that adopt the full range of SKYACTIV technologies and the KODO - Soul of Motion design theme. It is the first model to be equipped with Mazda's unique brake energy regeneration system, i-ELOOP.

The 2012 Australian International Motor Show will open to the press on October 18, and to the public from October 19 to 28, 2012. Mazda will hold its press conference on the morning of Thursday, October 18 from 9:12 to 9:22 local time.

We just received a 5 out of 5 customer rating on DealerRater

Dealerrater

"Easily the most painless car buying experience ever! Contacted Jason about the car I was looking for (2012 Mazda3 iTouring, Black, Automatic) and he quickly sent back the best price of any of the dealerships I had contacted in San Diego county. Could have tried to get some local dealerships to match his bid but he and Carlos were so easy and straightforward to deal with it was worth the 40 mile drive. And Katie made the payment & financing process quick and painless. The whole process from the time I arrived to the time I had the keys was about 30 minutes! Definitely the best way to buy a car if you know exactly what you're looking for."-rkeeley

The 2013 Mazda CX-5 has a style and feel that appeals

2013_mazda_cs-5_photo_2

Compact crossover utility vehicles are my favorite because they marry the function of an SUV with the handling and fuel economy of a small sedan or station wagon. Plus, these mini-CUVs actually have enough cargo space to accommodate the needs of most buyers, with the exception of those that need a third seat for carpooling.

Mazda’s all-new CX-5 has fresh styling with a new design theme that is called KODO, Soul of Motion. It is a welcome departure from Mazda’s grinning face grille.

The CX-5 reflects the company’s fun-to-drive philosophy by showcasing sharp and responsive handling while returning excellent fuel economy.

The CX-5 comes in Sport, Touring and Grand Touring models, in either front-wheel or all-wheel drive. Prices start at $20,695 for the Sport, $23,895 for the Touring and $27,045 for the Grand Touring. The Sport can be equipped with a six-speed manual or a six-speed automatic transmission, but the Touring and Grand Touring are only available with the automatic. I drove an all-wheel-drive Grand Touring and its base price was $28,295.

For Midwestern winters, I would choose all-wheel drive over front-wheel drive, but buyers in southern climes will be happy with front-wheel drive.

The CX-5 uses what Mazda calls Skyactiv Technology to achieve fuel economy that is rated at 26 miles per gallon in the city and 35 on the highway for the front-wheel-drive version with the six-speed manual transmission. The highway number is mighty impressive for a vehicle with such a tall and boxy profile.

All-wheel-drive models with the automatic transmission are rated at 25 city and 31 highway, which is still quite good compared to competitors such as the Honda CR-V, Toyota RAV4 and Hyundai Santa Fe.

Skyactiv is more of a strategy than a technology. Mazda uses high-strength, lightweight steel for the chassis to keep weight down, and that means a small, highly efficient engine can be used. The one used in the CX-5 is a 2.0-liter, four-cylinder that delivers 155 horsepower. It has an aluminum block, dual overhead cams, direct fuel injection, variable cam timing and a high compression ratio. It runs on regular fuel.

A 2.0-liter engine is small for a vehicle this size, and it shows when you load the vehicle with people or need a strong burst of power for climbing hills or entering the freeway. The hot-selling Honda CR-V has 30 more horsepower, and the Toyota RAV4 has 24 more. Clearly, Mazda chose fuel economy over performance, and that may be wise in a time of expensive gasoline.

The CX-5 makes driving actually fun because it has such nice handling. It acquits itself at least as well as, and sometimes better than, the Mazda3, and that’s not an easy task for a vehicle that is relatively tall.

Ride quality is an excellent combination of comfort and control. The electronic power steering has a nice feel, and body roll is held in check nicely during cornering. The tight suspension that yields good handling is not so firm that it makes the ride harsh or choppy.

Compact crossovers are about function and versatility, and that means the interior is a key to how useful the vehicle is over a long period of time. The CX-5 shines in its ability to carry various-sized cargo, be comfortable and offer popular convenience items.

The Grand Touring test car was equipped with the technology package that included GPS navigation, satellite radio, high-intensity headlights and keyless ignition. Other standard features included stability control, heated front seats, Bose audio system, Bluetooth connectivity and dual-zone climate control.

The leather-trimmed sport seats had excellent lateral support and were quite comfortable.

One or both sides of the rear seat can be folded.

Other safety features include anti-lock brakes with brake assist, traction control and front, side and side-curtain airbags.

Price

The base price of the test car was $28,295. Options included navigation, high-intensity headlights, satellite radio, keyless ignition and an auto-dimming rearview mirror. The sticker price was $30,415.

Warranty

Three years or 36,000 miles with a five-year, 60,000-mile powertrain warranty.
